Remember everyone who claims to fix mold problems doesn’t have a clue. They just read the label on the products at Home Depot and suddenly they are experts.

Rain vs drought

Every night for the past few years the local news people have moaned the lack of rain. They interviewed farmers who had lost their land to the banks. They talked to politicians who said it was the “global warming”. The umbrella manufacturers who were laying people off.

Now we have rain. The amount I remember from my childhood.

The same newscasters are moaning the water.

They are interviewing the farmers who are losing their farms because of the water. Talking to politicians giving credit to “global warming”. And the umbrella manufacturer who cannot make umbrellas fast enough.

But it is causing more molds. During the dry times windows and doors weren’t caulked. Roofs weren’t repaired.

But it didn’t matter. There were other things to spend money on.

Now the news is also moaning because roofs need repair. How unfair of the rain.

I have even heard news people telling us that Hussein Obama will do something about the rain when he is sworn in to the Presidency. And he’ll also fix all the water pipes that are going to break from the global warming ???

If you are hiring people to make water repairs make sure you word the contract correctly.

I once had water coming in from the deck above into the double paned windows below.

The repair guy came to collect his money after a rain. It was still leaking.

He said, “You hired me to repair the deck.”

I said, “No I hired you to stop the water.”

You could read it in his face. “You mean you expected quality work?”

The Future of Mold Treatment

I was in New Orleans once and a contractor was bragging about his mold killing ability.

“I can seal up any house so that mold cannot grow in it”

HHhhmmmm?

I asked him if he did before/after testing to back up his claim to his clients.

“The client believes me when I say I killed the mold.”

I’m sure they do. I am a little more scientific about mold. I require proof that the job is needed and proof that the job was done right.

For every thousand mold remediators that don’t test, one may actually kill the mold. But they all believe they know what they are doing. If they tested only one would believe it. The 999, once their belief system is bashed, either quit doing mold or join the realm of the quasi criminals that always seem to deal inside every system. Doing what they do the same way they did when they were good remediators but now knowing they are just taking money from nice people.

These people become the ones who might destroy the business when the government steps in to destroy everything. And the criminals go back to building mold into the house like they did before they became a mold expert.

A year or so ago Congress had hearings on killing mold. I called and asked if I could speak about all natural mold relief.

NO! Only companies like D****t could speak. The people who make the most unnatural mold killers. The ones that kill people. My all natural material was not being allowed to compete in a governmental arena. Or even speak.

I found out recently from a government person that D****t funded the group that called for the Congressional hearings. And D****t decided on who would be heard from.

So now government contracts go to D****t people. And they tell the people who use their material that they don’t need to test because they KNOW it works.

I am just allowed to do individual’s homes and businesses.

But one day when the quasi criminals bring the government down around our collective ears, D****t will do ALL mold remediation. And innocent people will start dying.

When soldiers returning from Vietnam started dying the government said it wasn’t because of the chemicals used in Vietnam. The ones made by D****t.

When soldiers came back from the 1st war with Hussein reported weird diseases, the government said that the chemicals made by D****t weren’t the cause.

So I am sure they will say the same thing when the 1st Mold War starts having casualties.

Maybe we can head everything off by insisting on before and after testing NOW.

Indoor Environment and Sports Performance

I saw a horse race once where the winner was not declared until the race people had a chance to look at the “photo finish.”

Boy was it close. There was about 3 inches difference between first and second place.

What could that second place horse have done in that mile or so of endeavor?

What little bit extra could have won that race?

How much extra energy or endurance did that horse need? 5%, 10%??

For three inches in a mile race, the horse needed less than 5% more performance to win.

What about a high school track star? How much extra do they need to go to the Olympics?

Probably about 5% more energy; 5% more mental clarity.

Let’s back up in time.

When the high school student [or professional athlete] sat in the dressing room, what were they breathing? When they were at home in their bedroom, what were
they touching?

Most people exposed to mold or some pollutants will show somewhere between 5-10% performance loss.

For more goto http://www.canarycoalition.org/abby.html

This is due to:
1. Slightly impaired oxygen uptake
2. Scrambled neurotransmitters that confuse muscle tissue
3. Interference with chemical cycles in the production of energy
4. Mental acuity interference

Mold

Molds give off chemicals that mimic natural signal chemicals in the body. These chemicals can cause confusion inside the body. An athlete needs focus not confusion.

For more goto http://www.themoldlab.com/mytcotoxins.htm

Mold loves moist buildings. Can you think of anything wetter than a high school dressing room? And many homes have wet basements or attics.

So if you get rid of the mold in the athletes dressing room and home you can gain 5-10% extra performance, right? Well almost.

Store cleansers

We also have to think about regular chemicals in the home that can also interfere with nerve/muscle junctions.

Most high schools try to get rid of mold and bacteria with bleach. Well, bleach won’t kill mold. But that’s the subject of another article. Bleach will burn the lungs and mess up vision and cause disorientation.

Some of the things you buy at the store contain phenols and formaldehyde. Like bleach these cleaners scar the lungs and decrease the person’s ability to breathe efficiently.

For more goto http://www.parish-supply.com/chemicals_in_your_closet.htm

Does this contribute to an Olympic destiny? Hardly.

Ozone machines

Some people use ozone machines to disinfect the air in locker rooms. The logic is that ozone is all natural. Well, so is arsenic.

Ozone has been traced to lowered lung efficiency. The lungs become less elastic and so the amount of air sucked in is less. Now there is something that will
decrease athletic ability. Probably more than the 5-10% we have been talking about.

Conclusion

Okay what will clean the environment and not harm the potential sports hero?

Go to your health food store and look for cleaners with tea tree oil [Melaleuca oil] or Grapefruit Seed Extract. They kill mold and bacteria but don’t cause changes in the body’s ability to function at peak efficiency.

Our company motto is, “If You Can’t Drink It, Don’t Spray It.”

Just changing your cleaning products and cleaning up mold can add that 5-10% performance to an athlete. And that, my friend, is the topic of this article.

How is mold like AIDS?

Don’t laugh. Both get a lot of coverage in the press. Mold isn’t a
politically sensitive issue but there are a lot of similarities.

1. Both get into your system without being felt.

If you are living, working or studying in a moldy environment
there will be mold spores floating in the air. Every time you breathe,
these mold spores move through your nose, sinuses and into your lungs.
Each of these spots is moist and warm. Ideal environments for mold
spores to set up housekeeping. From these locations the spores release
mycotoxins (mold poisons) that get into the blood stream and spread
through the body.

2. Both attack your immune system so you can’t fight of normal,
everyday diseases. Mold kills white blood cells. These are the body’s
primary defense against invading bacteria and viruses.

3. Both kill indirectly. Yes I said kill.

Cancer is probably the leading cause of death with an AIDS
patient. The body’s defenses are so weak that even simple diseases
become life threatening. Mold releases poisons that are known to
cause cancer. Chemicals like the Aflotoxins and Ochratoxins were
written about 30 years ago. This is OLD science. These are found
in most of the household molds we run into in our investigations.
The most common death from mold is a condition called a T-cell
lymphoma.

http://www.themoldlab.com/DrDennis.pdf

Sometimes mold will get into the brain and cause death
directly, but this isn’t very common.

Mold also can lead to Heart Attacks. Many of the mold
toxins attack the connective tissue in the vascular system, including
the heart. Again this is OLD science. Nothing new or dramatic.

4. Both can be prevented.

The easiest way to prevent mold induced diseases is to "Get rid of
the Mold". This is fairly easy as long as you do it by natural means. If
you use toxic chemicals to kill mold you are just replacing one problem
for another. Chemicals called borates are commonly used to kill mold.
Most of the time they are used incorrectly and don’t work. But for
about 15% of the population, the only cure for the borate reactions is
to move out of your house forever. We have seen this happen on many
occasions.

We all kow how to prevent AIDS. ;-)

But how are they DIFFERENT? AIDS can’t really be cured yet. Mold can.
There are botanical treatments that will remove the mold from
your body. It involves a few daily nose sprays.

So you see, mold and AIDS are not as far apart as you would think.

Both can kill and both work without you knowing it.

How Not to Kill Mold

We hear about toxic mold in the news all the time.
It has been linked with:

* Headaches
* Sinus Infections
* Coughing
* Weakened Immune System
* Dizziness
* Skin Infections
* Ear Infections
* Cancer
* Brain Damage
* ADHD

The toxins (poisons) that the molds create are harmless to humans
outdoors where concentrations are low. Indoors, concentrations
go up. When the amounts are sufficiently high, the mycotoxins
(mold poisons) can make you and your kids sick.

The Arab Oil Embargo of 1972 caused us to tighten up our homes
to conserve energy. This has allowed mold toxins to build up
even in homes with only a moderate amount of mold colonies.
You often aren't sick enough to go to the doctor when you are
infected by mold. You take aspirin for your headaches and
decongestants for your sinuses.

But over time these problems get worse. Minor problems with
the sinuses turn into inflammatory problems.

Inflammatory problems include:
* Lupus
* Arthritis
* Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
* Blood vessel deterioration

The most common approach to killing mold is to use bleach.
Unfortunately, bleach doesn't kill mold. It just bleaches it.
It takes the color out. The mold is still alive and producing
its poisons but we cannot see it.

The EPA, at one point, said to use bleach to get rid of mold
on glass and tile surfaces only. However, as of 2002, the
EPA does not recommend the use of chlorine bleach.
(http://www.epa.gov/iaq/molds/i-e-r.html)

Many chemicals that kill mold will burn people's lungs. This is
particularly true for small children. Even EPA approved mold
killers do this.

Most, if not all, companies that eliminate mold use these
strong chemicals that are very toxic to people with asthma (3 of
7 people according to the American Lung Association). Many people
with asthma cannot reenter their own houses if they have been
sprayed with commercial fungicides (mold killers). And to add
insult to injury, most fungicides are not applied properly so
they do not even kill the mold.

There are 100,000's of different molds. Each causes it own
problems; each has its own needs. The trick to killing mold
is to know what molds you have and deny them their basic
needs. This gets rid of the mold but does not poison the
residents.

Leaky Showers and tubs

Probably one of the worst things in a home is the shower, or the tub.

Most people love their shower. There is nothing like rehydrating under the hot stream of water after a long nights sleep. It is almost hypnotic. I have a lot of trouble getting out of the shower each morning. Work looms so I have to. But I don’t like it. If I could work in the shower… oh dream on.

But what is the main cause of mold. Water. Leaks in pipes account for a large amount of unwanted water. The shower is turned on and off so many times in a day that parts wear out. Like the toilet. Sitting and getting up wears out the seal.

And many times the builders, the jokesters, fix the pipes so once the warranty goes away the pipes leak. Kinda like the builder here in Knoxville who ran the gutter extensions back into the basement. Every time it rained the basement flooded.

It is like the dentist who fixes one tooth and while he is in the mouth runs the drill over a good tooth. In 6 months there will be more work.

Now there are good builders who put a door on the wall behind the pipes. Sometimes we see them behind the pipes on a bath tub. So periodically you can open the door and feel the pipes for moisture. Oh heck, you can put a door behind the shower yourself.

And while you are at it change the seal on the toilet.

Carpets

I saw a show on TV the other day about how bare wooden floors were a sign of poverty. Rich people put down carpet. But hard wood floors have made a come back. They are beautiful and so clean. Or at least they should be clean.

Carpets have all that fabric where food particles can hide. Can’t hide on hard wood.

And what loves to eat food on the floor? Besides your dog, I mean. Mold of course.

I spoke at a South Georgia education meeting and who was in the audience? People from Dalton Georgia, carpet capital of the world. They were there to heckle me when I said the schools should get rid of their carpets.

They, of course, want more carpets to go into the schools. Profit, you know.

They stated things like carpets prevent broken heads when kids fall. I came back and asked for one, just one, case where a kid hit their head on the floor. They couldn’t because kids hit furniture on their way to the floor.

They said that the maintenance people could keep the carpets clean and sanitary.

Most schools clean their carpet with the cheapest stuff they can find. It usually is high in sodium laureth sulfate. After they clean the carpets absenteeism goes up due to lung problems. This stuff eats away kid’s lungs. As does formaldehyde in carpet cleaners.

A good janitor is worth his weight in gold. But at some time he will die and be replaced by a low wage goof to save money. If your success relies on maintenance you are doomed eventually.

We had a school in Tennessee that closed due to mold. The janitor had to disconnect the gutter extensions to mow the lawn. Then he had to reconnect them. Finally one day he threw the extenions away. The rain didn’t flow away from the building and mold caused the school to close.

Just remember, if you like the feel of carpet between your toes, put throw rugs on hard wood. Then you can clean the carpets in your washing machine.
